A new local campaign is asking drivers to take a little more care as they travel along Bow Street and Cheapside and to remember that the speed limit is 20mph.

From 3 to 10 October 2026, 20 is Plenty is inviting local businesses, residents and others to get involved, with posters appearing in windows and along the street as a friendly reminder to slow down.

The idea is being led by Kim Woods of Langport Vintage Shop and Market, with the support of Langport Area Business Group (Langport Where It’s To).

Kim Woods said: “Slower streets mean safer, stronger communities. As a local business, we’re proud to be leading the 20 is Plenty campaign and encouraging people to slow down and help make our streets safer for everyone who uses them.”

Local business owner Peter Roberts said: “We love our little town, with all its history and fab little shops and cafés. We’d love others to slow down when they visit and take it all in too.”

Bow Street and Cheapside are a special part of Langport, with independent shops and businesses sitting alongside people’s homes. They are also ancient streets, with historic buildings, narrow pavements and plenty of people coming and going on foot. Keeping speeds down to 20mph can make a real difference to how safe and comfortable the street feels for everyone using it.

Sara Peterkin, who lives on Bow Street and is supporting the campaign, said: “Slower traffic along Bow Street will dramatically improve life in Langport, cars regularly whizz past with wing mirrors brushing elbows and pedestrians jumping to safety.”

The campaign is also backed by Langport Town Council. [Morag Kelly, Deputy Clerk] said: “We’re really pleased to support the ‘20 is Plenty’ campaign in Langport. Keeping speeds down makes our streets safer, friendlier and more enjoyable for everyone.

Langport Vintage Market will be getting involved too on 10 October, helping the message reach people visiting and shopping in the town.

Posters will be distributed from the week commencing 21 September, ready for the campaign to begin on 3 October.

If you live or work locally and would like a poster, or simply fancy getting involved, please email labginfo@gmail.com. The more windows displaying the message, the more visible it will be.

The idea couldn’t be much simpler: 20 is plenty. Slow down, look around and enjoy Langport.
