Hickory Dickory Dock…..
……. unlike the nursery rhyme it was not the mouse that came down! Most readers will already know that Langport Town Clock was removed from its position above the Town Hall in September.
At the outset of the Clock project, the intention was to simply remove and restore the two clock faces. The Clock casing was to be restored in situ, awaiting the reinstallation of its shiny new dials.
It was only when the Cumbria Clock company began work that it was discovered that the arm on which the Clock was suspended was dangerously rotted. This was neither apparent from within the Town Hall nor obvious by visual observation from street level. The wooden beam, as it transpired, was covered in lead and concealed the badly rotted wood.
This is not a situation that is simple and quick to resolve. In addition to more than doubling the cost of the project, there are complex issues involving conservation, structural engineering, building control and then the matter of reinstalling the clock with scaffolding, road closure, cranes and coordinating multiple companies and agencies,
The Clock itself is in the safe hands of the Cumbria Clock Company which is working with the Town Trust to reinstall the Clock as soon as possible. Given the complexities of the situation this is now likely to be in the Spring. There is also the delicate matter of finance and further support for the project will be required.
