Community Grants

Six local groups benefitted to the tune of £7,000 in grants awarded by the Finance & Personnel Committee of Langport Town Council.

In the second year of Langport’s new-style community grants scheme, a group who wants a grant must send a representative to the meeting to speak in support of their application. In this way Councillors can get to know more about the group, and can discuss their aims and objectives in a friendly and constructive way.

The groups who attended the meeting of the Finance & Personnel Committee were:
• Huish & Langport Youth Club
• Huish Episcopi Academy
• Langport & Huish Senior Citizens’ Club
• Girlguiding Somerset International Camp
• Langport Area Business Group
• Langfest17

The Youth Club were granted £3,500 to support the running costs of their range of youth services. This is an annual grant, which is subject to a Service Level Agreement which sets out what services will be provided with the money awarded.

Grants of £1,000 were made to Huish Episcopi Academy, for the swimming pool project, and to Langfest17, towards the cost of running of this year’s Langport festival.

The Committee agreed to award Langport Area Business Group £900 towards Langport’s entry in SouthWest in Bloom, i.e. Langport in Bloom. The Business Group have already put the prize money of £500 for being runner-up in our category in last year’s Great British High Street Awards towards Langport in Bloom.

Smaller grants were made to the Senior Citizens’ Club, who were granted £500 towards the costs of running coach trips and their Christmas Dinner event. The sum of £100 was granted towards sending a representative to the Girlguiding International Summer Camp.

Those who attended welcomed the opportunity to talk about their group, and Councillors felt that they could award grants from an informed perspective, instead of it being a paper exercise. All groups were reminded that Huish Episcopi Parish Council, like most parish councils, also has funds available for community grants.

Details about how to apply for community grants are available on the Langport.life website.
